Yes, the day has arrived. The day this trip was planned for…my birthday. And I want to thank all of my friends from the scattered places around the world for the birthday greetings. Of course I went meandering today…here are some pictures of the perfect birthday..

A sunbeam on the shrine across the bridge

Cloud bank over the Lido

Sparkling water…yes, the Grand Canal

Dancing gondolas near Rialto Bridge

Didn’t believe me about the minks, did you? Unless of course you’ve been here at this time of year.

Just a few calles from Rialto and no one is here.

Another quiet corner

And then I got the message that my camera battery was exhausted. So home to recharge both of us with plans to meet Karen and Mike for night pictures of the lights in San Marco.

Sunset on the way to the vaporetto

Sparkling gondolas

The light in the Piazetta

Very simple tree…between the Lions

Karen and Mike outside Florian’s…my fuzzy photos look better in black and white.

The lights made photos difficult

Cafe del Doge (Doh-jay for those who don’t know)…the most expensive coffee, chocolate and hazelnut cream I’ve ever had but you are paying for atmosphere here. And the band wasn’t playing and there was no cover charge.

A better picture with our entire tray.

Si, Florian’s

Looking back in the window…we had that table in the back.

And we caught the vaporetto home, where at my stop after consulting with Karen I went to the corner shop and bought my faux fur hat…in white…very Lara/Dr. Zhivago. Picture maybe after dinner domani.

And they finally turned the lights on what passes for a tree in my Campo

And just in case you need something…my favorite hardware store is open.

All in all the best birthday ever!

About mvaden1948

I love to travel to Venice (and probably other parts of Italy and beyond) and my camera leads me where she wants without any consideration as to whatever plans I may have. I enjoy photographing nature, my cat and anything that strikes my fancy. I have a "thing" for interesting doors and architectural details.

Note to Bert. Your rude post was unapproved. Do not try that again!

What a lovely birthday, Michelle! I know the day has been full of great joy! And you still have a week to go…..that means your birthday adventures will continue for a few more days! Looking forward to a pic of you in “the hat”.

  3. mvaden1948 says:

    Ciao Silkie,
Yes, a picture in the hat will be forthcoming. Dinner tonight at Luna Sentada.

First and foremost, I hope you had the happiest of birthdays! It looked very enjoyable and it seems you had great weather!
Secondly, thank you for the lights at night! They are gorgeous! I loved reliving Florians. I only ate outdoors, but went inside to use the restroom. Next time, I need to have a cuppa indoors. If I was a coffee drinker, your hazelnut coffee looks absolutely delicious!
I am excited to see your Zhivago hat. White! Sounds very wintery. I can just imagine you wearing it, walking in the snow, across “your” bridge

    Ciao, Leah,
The snow is not to be…totally out of the 10 day forecast and in fact it looks like we are in for a warming trend. Up into the 40’s by Sunday. I was colder today than I’ve been so far but then I was sitting outside in my favorite front seat on the vaporetto. And there are some Asian vacation pictures that are going to have that lone woman in the white hat in them. They seemed to think I was a photo op from their flotilla of gondolas. That’s okay, I don’t mind having my picture taken.
Tonight is the dinner that we couldn’t do last night because the restaurant was closed. Need to head out to meet my friends soon (K and M).
Would hot chocolate be more to your liking? They do it very well there.
Maybe when I live here you can come visit and we can go.

Give me a few years and it will happen.
Just had the most amazing dinner. Will put it on next post!

Hi Leah!!!! We 3 will meet in Venice! Um, Michelle, Leah has a special place in my heart, thus the hijacking ❤

  8. mvaden1948 says:

Yes, my dear, you have a special place in my heart too!

Re Ladies with minks. My friend and I were just wandering aimlessly in Venice, not paying attention to where we were going. Suddenly, we realized we had no idea where we were and the neighborhood was a little dodgy. We kept walking and walking, but the streets were getting narrower and narrower, deserted and it started getting dark. Finally, we spotted a woman in a long mink coat. We knew she was going to a betterneighborhood, so we started following her. She was far ahead of us and we had to run to get near her.Several times, we lost her around corners, Finally,we turned one corner and there was a main street. So, always follow the lady in the mink .
Hope your birthday dinner was great. Joan

      Hi Joan,
Stay a while in Venice and you will come to understand that there are no “dodgy” neighborhoods…even at night. Venice is the safest place I have ever been. And ladies in minks are everywhere…not just going to main streets. There was a lady in her mink shopping for groceries in my little Punto the other day. Guess what I’m getting at is that following the mink does not guarantee that you will get where you want to go. When in doubt…ask directions…of anyone…just a “Dove vaporetto” or “Dove San Marco” and if you’re really lucky they will say something in Italian that probably means “follow me” and they will personally escort you to where you are headed. It happens to me all the time.
The dinner was fabulous…see next post which I just completed.
